There are a few types of extinguishers, and they need to be maintained as well as regularly checked. Before you fight a fire, you must ensure that you are safe and only use a fire extinguisher if it is safe to do so. In most cases, it is usually best to leave putting out a fire with an extinguisher to the professionals.

Be very careful of putting water on a fire, as it turns to steam and expands at a ratio of 1700 to 1. This also adds more oxygen to the fire, and steam is now another burn risk. Fire blankets also can be used to control a fire, but be sure that you are trained to use them because you can be burned if you don't use them correctly.

Types of extinguishers include:

  • Water
  • Foam
  • Dry Powder
  • CO2
  • Wet Chemical

There are special rules for the placement of extinguishers. No one should have to travel more than 30 m to find one, and they should be mounted in pairs on the wall. Care should be taken to keep them clean and protected.
